Eight years later, we finally know the mystery of the end of Origin. Michael Caine has spoken about the eternal mystery of the film and has given a definitive answer. When Dom Cobb, the character of Leonardo DiCaprio, returns home and puts the totem on the table, is it dream or reality?
Caine thought the same thing that all of us did after reading the script, so he asked Christopher Nolan what was going on. Here's the end of the mystery: "When I had the Origin script, I was a little puzzled by it, and I said [to Nolan] 'I do not understand where the dream is.' I said 'When is it in the dream and when is it in reality? "He said," Well, when you're on stage, it's reality. "So, get it."
If I'm on stage, it's reality. If not, it's a dream
There has been a lot of talk about the final scene and a lot of theories have been published. However, what many fans defended is that in the script you can read "Behind Cobb, at the table, the totem keeps turning." Unless the director cheated on him, that phrase in the script stops making sense and we can breathe easy knowing that Cobb got to meet his family.
THE THEORY OF THE OTHER TOTEM
One theory that gained momentum is that Cobb's real totem is his wedding ring, so he can constantly feel if he behaves in a strange way - remember that the totems have an abnormal weight or a different feeling than they would have in the reality-. However, he had enough detractors, since, if the ring is his totem, why does he look at the top then?
This led to another very interesting theory that says that Cobb knows he is in a dream because he can manipulate the spinning top. If you are outside the dream world, you could not change your trajectory or speed. That is why, in the final scene, he leaves the top and goes to play with his games, since he has already reached the place where he had always wanted to be.
