The nodes in the history of Megalodón generate suspense during the first hour of the film. In addition, it has funny details that do not feel excessive or forced. Between fear and nerves, it could cause another laugh. However, the escapes of the megalodon - a species of giant shark extinct millions of years ago - are very repetitive and similar, which makes it a little tired the last 30 minutes.
Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), Jaxx Herd (Ruby Rose), Suyin (Li Bing Bing) and Dr. Heller (Robert Taylor) never end up feeling safe. They are in constant agony because of the stalking of the biggest shark in history and they transmit it.
Megalodón tells the story of the crew of a submarine that goes on an excursion to the bottom of the sea to discover plant and animal species never studied before. The first expedition is a success, because they reach the desired place, but do not take into account the risks involved in arriving at an unknown place. This causes that half crew is caught in the middle of dangerous and enormous animals. This is how Jonas Taylor, a deepwater expert diver, leads a rescue operation that will revive a dark era of his past.
Despite the arrival of the ingenious diver played by Jason Statham, the characters never feel calm. There are constantly stimulants that maintain the suspense of the stalking of the animal due to its characteristics -such as its speed, ingenuity and size-, as well as the conditions of the place -elegant, but very unprotected-. In addition, the character of the British actor has some funny and cynical dialogues. Statham, whose character holds a disrespectful grudge towards Dr. Heller for a situation in his past, manages to generate empathy and sadness despite the cynical attitude with which he plays his role.
However, the surface chase with the afloat boat is repeated on many occasions and the resolution is very similar in each of them. Even a sequence starring Jack Morris, before the end, feels very forced and cuts the plot line of the story.
On the other hand, it does not have any new elements that have not been used previously in killer shark films: tourists in danger, a heroic rescue by an expert in the ocean and a lot of blood spilled among the hundreds of teeth of these animals.
For the rest, it is a very entertaining film that surprises with a criticism in the mouth of Winston Chao, a visionary oceanographer, with respect to the ethics of the study of new species and the environment.
